Discovering new bands: NEONFLY

Today I’m writing this post to introduce you a band I discovered last summer. Be sure you’ll listen to them in Akiesú, when we start the new season. Soon, babies, soon…

Formed in 2008, established in London, and with only one album released, they've already got themselves a good reputation, based on the many concerts and festivals they've played and the fantastic response from both audience and critics. I’m talking about NEONFLY

The band is formed by Frederick Thunder (guitar), Willy Norton (vocals), Paul Miller (bass), Patrick Harrington (guitar) and Boris Le Gal (drums).

After an EP called “Clever Disguise” and quite a few concerts in UK and Europe –supporting some great names (Freedom Call, Pagan’s Mind, Power Quest or H.E.A.T., to name a few), or playing festivals like Bloodstock or Hard Rock Hell Road Trip Ibiza- the band’s debut album, “Outshine The Sun”, saw the light in September 2011. This fact has meant nothing but great feedback and a bunch of positive consequences for NeonFly: great reviews praising the album, more shows at some of the most important festivals in Europe (Download, Masters of Rock and Galapagai), an extensive European tour supporting Magnum, great welcome from the public of the continent and a video for the song “A Gift To Remember” –which you can see below.

2013 is being a busy year for NeonFly too. The recordings for a new album started, but they had to be interrupted… to support Sonata Arctica in UK (including 4 sold-out shows!). If you weren’t there, maybe you saw them at Masters of Rock last July… Or at Bloodstock in August… Or perhaps supporting nothing less than Mr. Alice Cooper on his shows in Germany last summer!

Not bad, huh? NeonFly have just started and already conquered quite a few good goals. With such an impressive CV already, we shouldn’t lose track of this fantastic quintet, who promise to come back with more of their fresh melodic power metal!

ENTOMBED and CENTURY MEDIA announce global deal and new album in October 2013!

ENTOMBED have just finished the recording of their devastating tenth album, called "Back To The Front", at Studio Bohus (Abba, Europe) in Sweden with producer Roberto Laghi (In Flames). Cover artwork is by painter Zbigniew Bielak (Watain, Vader, etc.). “Back To The Front” will be released on the 29th of October. This new album will be 666% the 'Entombed sound' everyone loves. Without being a way back to the past making it sound identical to classic records like “Left Hand Path” or “Clandestine”, what you can expect is a 'bone-breaking' work that will make that fans of records like “Wolverine Blues”, “To Ride,…” or “Morning Star” cry with joy. From the morbid, full of anger lyrics, to the incredible riffs and inimitable strength of L-G Petrov's titanic roar, 'Back to the Front' has everything, so get ready for the attack.

The band was formed under the name of Nihilist in 1987 and changed to Entombed in 1989. Together with Morbid (in whose line-up singer L-G Petrov was the drummer), Treblinka/Tiamat, Grave and Dismember, Entombed/Nihilist belong to the first bands that forged the immortal Swedish death metal sound that became popular, while the more technical and punk sound of bands from Florida was born at the same time. Inspired by bands as diverse as Autopsy, Motorhead, Discharge or Kiss, Entombed have never spared on thoughts beyond the limits, achieving a unique style some fans called Death'N'Roll, but asides of that, we talk about a band with unique style and identity. A sound that has influenced thousands of metal, hardcore and rock bands, and whose legend is back now.

Stay tuned for all the news about the release through the band's profile on Facebook, www.facebook.com/entombedofficial

Have a look at the new Bloodlights' video below!

Besides, Bloodlights have announced an European tour to present it. An unbeatable chance to feel all the power of rock'n'roll live, as it has to be. Check all the dates -and more info about the band- on their Facebook page!

RIVERSIDE: Tour in Spain

RIVERSIDE are one of the biggest progressive bands nowadays, and their fifth album, "Shrine Of New Generation Slaves (SONGS)" confirms it. Recorded in Warsaw, at the same studios as the trilogy "Reality Dream", Serakos Studio. Positive reviews haven't take long to appear (album of the month on the German progressive magazine Eclipsed).

Contrasts are remarkable again, a bit farther from metallic influences to get a little closer to the art rock that starts to predominate in Poland. Tracks like "New Generation Slave" aren't less surprising, pure Black Sabbath style, an album absolutely full of nuances and surprises. We can't ignore the fantastic artwork either, made by  Travis Smith (Avenged Sevenfold, Anathema, Devin Townsend, Opeth); it perfectly reflects refleja the idea "SONGS" wish to transmit: an alegory to the sad, grey future of mankind.

Mariusz Duda comments about the single "Celebrity Touch" : "It talks about the times we're living. I believe everyone has a deep wish to feel important somehow, but this need isn't usually satisfied. Some can do it, and connect with celebrities' world. This story talks about those few and about a band who chose to play far from big galleries full of bullshit art".

Riverside keep again their own style, going far from most bands who flood the progressive scene elegantly and with determination. They are currently touring the wold with "New Generation Tour", which will bring them to Spain too. A must!

HYPOCRISY: Present "End Of Disclosure" in September (Spanish tour dates)

If you look up "workaholic" on a dictionary, you'll probably find an image of Peter Tägtgren. He is without a doubt the busiest man in metal scene. Despite his work as a producer and his project Pain, Peter hasn't left the band that took him where he is nowadays: HYPOCRISY. On top of death metal since they started in 1991, their record "The Final Chapter" meant a before and after on metal scene, being accesible to a bigger audience.

One of the secrets for their success is, no hesitation, Peter Tägtgren, a freak, a party-animal and, of course, an incredible composer, as we can que es un bicho raro, un juerguista y, por supuesto, un compositor increíble, como podemos comprobar en su reciente creación "End Of Disclosure"

Peter says: "This time I wanted to go back to the roots, I felt as if I had lost them in the last couple of records. I wanted to go straight to the point and "End Of Disclosure" is more Hypocrisy than ever, its hunger, its epic sound... It only remains to enjoy it!"

Edited in late May 2013 and with magnificent artwork by Wes Benscoter (Slayer, Kreator, Nile, Vader...) there's nothing left for us but surrendering once again to Tägtgren's mastery who, together with Mikael Hedlund (bass) and Horgh (drums) are coming to Spain after which has been a very long waiting for all their fans. These dates are a must for both Hypocrisy more veteran fans and the younger ones too.

TURISAS: "Turisas 2013" track by track + new video!!!

TURISAS have released their new album in almost every country in Europe (UK and France 2nd September; US and Canada 3rd September), and we've presented you some of the songs on the blog. Just few days ago, before the album release, I was lucky to catch the premiere of  "Turisas2013" on the radio, so I decided to take some notes and here I am trying to describe it for you...

First of all, 'Turisas2013' is a quite different thing from its elder brothers. Let's make things clear at this point: 'different' doesn't mean it's a good or bad thing itself, just that it's not similar to other stuff.  Besides, we're talking about a good band, so I decided to keep my mind and ears open to what was to come.

The album opens with the track "For Your Own Good", with a dark intro performed by the allegiance of a heavy distorted guitar and keyboard. This last, will continue drawing behind Mathias's voice and all along the song. As the chorus approaches, it still has the scent of the band somehow, but this melody and catchiness -far from "Battle Metal" or any other of their greatest hits- makes it sound quite mainstream, a more commercial song. Final growls. By the way... where are you, Olli?

We move on to "Ten More Miles", which has some good guitar lines and arpeggios and a nice contrast between clean and distortion. The song seems to have a marching tempo with a feeling of "nothing's gonna stop me" as if I was stepping onto the battlefield. The sentences we will chorus at the shows: "Who will be there when the skies turn grey? Turiiiisas!" This really feels like a new epic anthem for the band!

On "Piece by Piece" the keyboard creates the atmosphere and allies again with guitar, leading with its riff into the song. While on the verses we find clean vocals, in the chorus Mathias sounds rough and fierce, devouring your ears and demanding the whole of you. Backing vocals inject a sense of greatness to the song.

"Into the free": One of the songs we presented you on a previous blog entry, closer to Turisas' previous stuff than its predecessor 'For Your Own Good'. As it starts, I can see some mosh-pits  with this tune... Drums exhort you to move, whether you want it or not, while guitar creates a new melody. More backing vocals for us to sing along and some growls over Jussi's solo. Mind your heads when you headbang to this tune!

After the dose of dance, fight and sweat, folk comes "Run Bhang-Eater, Run!". Or so I thought from the percussion and folk instruments at the beginning. Then the metal part is added to keep developing the melody into more Turisas madness. Wait. Saxophone, gasps and moans... I felt as if I had opened the wrong door... Back to growls and double bass drum and more of this fun, good vibe melody, that prepares the way for the outro, a simple solo with long notes, with some bending/vibrato, and without excessive and unnecessary decorations, that ends on that sense of grandeur keyboards add.

"Greek fire" starts with a heavy riff like we've never listened to in this band. Very well chosen title, because the music actually makes me feel a big force stalking and getting ready to attack and defeat its victim mercilessly... Remarkable work of drum and bass (squeezing me from inside, creating that anxiety). As the fire, the song grows, and the choir over the riff make me visualise the real explosion. Wait for the bridge, with flames speading over the land... As terrible as fascinating -wouldn't mind to see a video version!

Another dose of  battle metal comes with "The days passed", its marching tempo, epic intro, and some more moments for violin to impress. We come back to the contrast between a more calmed verse and the growls in the chorus.

A song called "No Good Story Ever Starts With Drinking Tea" must have a good story behind, don't you think? -And then it starts! And it does with such a great (and unexpected, I should say) bass intro! Love the guitar and choir. I think we'll have more moshpits here, as the speed increases too... and don't think audiences remain too silent at the call of  "alcohol all night long".

And this is how we arrive to the last track, "We Ride Together".  From the messy, incoherent notes I took, I'd say this is a quite different song with a little bit of everything: starting with drum roll and western-like guitar, add trumpets and horns to it, Olli and his violin, surprising choirs, traditional Turisas chorus but with more typically heavy guitars... All of it make of this song a great finale for the album.

Variety. Strength. Surprising. Don't expect "Battle Metal II" because this is obviously a very different album for the band, as they intended. Actually, the line-up has changed too, and this is reflected on the music too. As a result, "Turisas2013" sounds heavier in general, with more guitar and keyboards -but this, I fear, has put violin to the background. Some bands find a formule that works for them, and repeat it because they know it'll produce good results; some seek to re-invent themselves, shake off categories and tags, experiment ane evolve. For Turisas this album implies a risky change but there is also very good stuff in it, like guitar melodies, keyboards atmospheres and magnificence or contrasts in the vocals, keeping at the same time Turisas' trademark. An awaited album that is already giving a lot to talk about! Do listen to it and share your opinion!

As I was about to click enter and upload this new post I got the news of Turisas' new video release! So here's your 2x1 and another glance into the album. Watch "Ten More Miles" below:

SPIN DOCTORS: European tour. Dates in Spain

SPIN DOCTORS celebrate the edition of their new album "If the river was whiskey", with an intense tour that will take them all over Europe, with four dates in Spain.  After touring half the globe with over 100 concerts in US and Europe to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their first album,  "Pocket full of Kryptonite", including a special re-edition, now they present a new collection of pure blues and rock songs.

Coming from New York's New School Of Jazz, in 1990 they surprised everyone with their first album, an undeniable hit with a simple but effective mixture of rock, pop y funk. "Pocket full of Kryptonite" was one of the most acclaimed albums in the 90s, both by the audience and critics. They sold over 10 million copies worldwide, which made the band's debut an international phenomenon.

An album full of hits, whose success is reflected on their continuous pressence on the most-sold and most-awarded album charts in the 90s: "Two Princes" was the most played track worldwide in 1993, and it has nothing less than 3 millions of certificated playings in radios of the whole planet.

Since their formation, the New Yorkers Spin Doctors have become one of the reference bands in alternative rock. They've known how to keep on the top of music business all through these two decades of their career. A band that keeps in top shape and who will doubtlessly bring the audience very good memories...
